Abstract
This study aims to describe the form, function, and meaning of the use of abbreviations and emoticons on the Facebook application as a means of digital communication for students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, UNPARI. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The research procedure includes data collection, data classification, analysis, and conclusion drawing. The research data consists of words, phrases, and emoticon symbols found in posts and comments columns of Facebook users. The data source comes from screenshots of posts and comments on Facebook accounts of students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program UNPARI who actively interact digitally. The data collection technique was carried out through the observing and taking notes method. Data analysis was carried out by identifying the types of abbreviations and emoticons, grouping them based on form and function, and then interpreting their meaning in the context of digital communication. The results show that the abbreviations used include phonological, graphological, and acronyms, while emoticons function as emotional markers, meaning emphasizers, and substitutes for nonverbal expressions. The use of abbreviations and emoticons aims to accelerate communication, create familiarity, and adapt to digital culture. The conclusion of this study shows that abbreviated language and emoticons have an important role in shaping the digital communication style of Indonesian language UNPARI and literature education students which is practical, expressive, and contextual.
